Summary

Researchers are investigating the effects of an integrated Yoga and Ayurveda program on patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a neurodegenerative autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and nerve damage, and conventional treatments often have limited efficacy and significant side effects. The study, which will involve 60 patients, will evaluate the effectiveness of a three-month program combining Ayurvedic Rasayanas, such as Lashuna, Bala, and Shatavari, with yoga therapy. Primary outcomes include measures of clinical disability, functional capacity, quality of life, cognition, and psychological parameters. Additionally, immunological biomarkers and gut microbiome composition will be analyzed. It is expected that the group receiving the integrated treatment will show significant improvements compared to standard treatment, mediated by mechanisms of neuroinflammatory modulation and neural protection. The study is registered in the Clinical Trials Registry-India and will be conducted until 2027.

Key points

  • The IYAM program combines Ayurvedic Rasayanas with yoga therapy, aiming at neuroinflammatory modulation.
  • Primary outcomes include the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and Functional Capacity (MSFC).
  • Secondary analyses will include immunological biomarkers and gut microbiome composition.
  • The study is a randomized clinical trial with 60 patients, ensuring methodological rigor.
  • Significant improvements in quality of life and cognition are expected in the IYAM group.

What the classical texts say

“A saúde é o estado em que os doshas, dhatus e malas estão em equilíbrio, e a mente e os sentidos estão em harmonia.”

— Caraka Saṃhitā, Cikitsāsthāna 1.1

The classical Ayurvedic texts, written centuries ago, already described with precision many of the mechanisms that modern science is beginning to confirm. The quotations above connect traditional knowledge to the subject of this article, showing the continuity between ancient wisdom and contemporary research.

✦ For you

If you live with multiple sclerosis or know someone who does, consider incorporating yoga practices and a balanced diet with herbs like Lashuna and Shatavari into your routine. These practices may help improve overall well-being and quality of life. Always seek a qualified healthcare professional for personalized guidance.

For practitionersExpand

In clinical practice, consider integrating yoga practices and the use of Rasayanas like Lashuna and Shatavari for patients with multiple sclerosis. Assess the state of the doshas and patients' mental health, as this may influence treatment effectiveness. The study provides an intervention model that can be adapted to improve patients' quality of life.
