Summary
Researchers identified that the ethanolic extract of Polyalthia longifolia leaves has nephroprotective potential against cisplatin-induced toxicity in Wistar rats. The plant, known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, was analyzed for its phytochemical composition using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The results showed that treatment with Polyalthia longifolia extract, at doses of 150, 300, and 600 mg/kg, reversed altered renal function markers such as urea and creatinine, in addition to improving antioxidant defense in the kidneys, restoring levels of glutathione and other antioxidant enzymes. The highest dose of 600 mg/kg demonstrated the most significant renal recovery, comparable to treatment with silymarin, a reference drug. These findings suggest that the compounds present in the leaves of Polyalthia longifolia may act synergistically to protect the kidneys against cisplatin-induced oxidative stress.
Key points
- The extract of Polyalthia longifolia reversed the elevation of renal markers such as urea and creatinine in rats treated with cisplatin.
- The dose of 600 mg/kg showed more pronounced renal recovery, comparable to treatment with silymarin.
- The extract improved antioxidant defense, restoring levels of glutathione and reducing lipid peroxidation in the kidneys.
- Histopathological analysis revealed significant recovery of cellular morphology after treatment with Polyalthia longifolia.
- The identified phytochemical composition includes N-Methylhernagine and 4-Acetamidobutanoic acid.
✦ For you
If you are concerned about your kidney health, consider including antioxidant-rich foods in your diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Additionally, stay hydrated and avoid excessive use of medications that may impair renal function. If you have persistent symptoms, seek a qualified healthcare professional.
For practitionersExpand
In clinical practice, consider including Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn.) Thwaites in formulations for renal support, especially in cases of drug-induced nephrotoxicity. Assess patients' renal function and adjust doses as necessary, monitoring the response to treatment.
