Summary
Researchers discovered that flavonoid extracts from the flower of Citrus aurantium var. amara (CAVAF) have significant anti-obesity potential. In a study with mice fed a high-fat diet, administration of CAVAF resulted in reduced body weight and fat levels in white adipose tissue (WAT). The extracts also decreased inflammation markers and improved insulin resistance. Molecular analysis revealed that CAVAF activates targets such as AMPK and PPARα, which are involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism and the promotion of WAT browning. Additionally, the expression of thermogenic genes, such as UCP1, was increased, indicating a potential to transform white adipose tissue into brown adipose tissue, which is metabolically more active. These findings suggest that flavonoids from CAVAF may be promising candidates for the treatment of obesity.
Key points
- CAVAF reduced body weight and WAT fat in mice on a high-fat diet.
- Administration of CAVAF increased the expression of UCP1, a thermogenic marker in WAT.
- Molecular targets AMPK and PPARα were identified as relevant to the anti-obesity effects of CAVAF.
- CAVAF inhibited inflammation in iWAT by regulating the expression of IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-10.
- 19 compounds were identified in CAVAF extracts, with high anti-obesity activity.
✦ For you
If you are looking for ways to support your metabolism, consider including foods rich in flavonoids, such as the flowers of Citrus aurantium, in your diet. Additionally, pay attention to how your body reacts to different types of foods and adjust your diet to promote a healthy balance. If you notice significant changes in your weight or health, seek a qualified healthcare professional.
For practitionersExpand
In clinical practice, consider including extracts of Citrus aurantium (CAVAF) in protocols for weight control and improvement of lipid metabolism. Assess the patient's condition regarding inflammation and insulin resistance, and adjust formulations as necessary. Combining with healthy lifestyle practices may enhance positive effects.
