Summary
Researchers are investigating the efficacy of combining Drakshavaleha with iron and folic acid supplements in treating iron deficiency anemia in women aged 18 to 49 years. The protocol of a randomized controlled clinical trial proposes that the addition of Drakshavaleha, an Ayurvedic preparation, may significantly increase hemoglobin (Hb) levels compared to the use of iron and folic acid alone. Participants will be divided into two groups: one will receive 200 mg of ferrous sulfate and 0.5 mg of folic acid, while the other will receive 6 g of Drakshavaleha along with the same dosage of iron and folic acid. Monthly follow-up will include complete blood count and iron profiles, in addition to further tests after three months. The study aims to understand how Drakshavaleha may improve iron absorption, contributing to more effective management of anemia. This trial is registered in the Clinical Trials Registry - India.
Key points
- Drakshavaleha may increase iron bioavailability, improving absorption.
- The study includes women with mild anemia (Hb 11-11.9 g/dL) to moderate (Hb 8-10.9 g/dL).
- The protocol includes monthly follow-up and laboratory tests to monitor the efficacy and safety of the treatment.
- The use of Drakshavaleha will be evaluated in conjunction with the administration of iron and folic acid.
- The research is registered under the number CTRI/2024/05/067169.
✦ For you
If you are dealing with fatigue or weakness, consider observing your diet and the inclusion of iron-rich foods, such as legumes and dark leafy vegetables. Additionally, combining foods that enhance iron absorption, such as fruits rich in vitamin C, may be beneficial. If symptoms persist, seek a qualified healthcare professional.
For practitionersExpand
Consider the inclusion of Drakshavaleha (Vitis vinifera) in protocols for patients with iron deficiency anemia, especially in women of reproductive age. Evaluate treatment response based on hemoglobin levels and iron profiles, adjusting the formulation as needed. This study may offer insights into the synergy between herbal medicine and conventional supplementation.
